Tampa's Alessi Bakeries celebrates 100 years in business

TAMPA — To celebrate a century in business, Alessi Bakeries this weekend is selling such local favorites as guava turnovers, coconut macaroons and custard eclairs for 29 cents — the price they went for in 1912.

The event runs 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday through Sunday and includes retro prices on some other items as well. The bakery is at 2909 W Cypress St.

Last month, the family-run business filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to an inability to pay its debts amid declining sales and an overleveraged manufacturing facility, according to documents filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court's Middle District of Florida.

Alessi executives say they are only reorganizing, and have no plans to scale back.
