The Florida Classic Clusters dog show gets started today

AKC competition gets a running start today

The Florida Classic Clusters AKC All-Breed Dog Show kicks off today from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Florida Classic Park, 5360 Lockhart Road, east of Brooksville. The event, which continues through Jan. 24, includes breed classes and judging, obedience and rally trials. Today's show features the Manatee Kennel Club. There will be vendors and other activities. Habitat, Lightning teaming up Friday

Habitat for Humanity of Hernando County will welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday as the Lightning Bug team mascot and members of the Energy Team will be at the Habitat thrift shop from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 19450 Cortez Blvd. Visitors can stop by for autographs and Lightning gear, as well as sign up to reserve a seat on the bus for the Hernando Habitat Night at the Lightning game on Feb. 6. Health office will close at lunchtime

Starting Friday, the Hernando County Health Department's Environmental Health office will be closed from noon to 1 p.m. weekdays. The new service hours will be 7:30 a.m. to noon and noon to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The office is at 15470 Flight Path Drive, south of Brooksville. Call (352) 540-6800, ext. 82139.

A Chinsegut center volunteer briefing

Chinsegut Nature Center will host a new volunteer orientation from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the center, 23212 Lake Lindsey Road, north of Brooksville. Participants will learn what volunteer opportunities are available at the nature center. A short hike will be included. Snacks and drinks provided; bring a lunch. You're invited to VFW Chili cook-off

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9236 will host a chili cook-off at 1 p.m. Sunday at the post, 3435 Shoal Line Blvd. Participants should bring two quarts of their own chili in a crock pot; there is no entry fee. The chili should be labeled mild, medium or hot, and indicate any specialty, such as vegetarian or seafood. Sampling is free for entrants. All others pay $1; non-entrants can have a free taste sample before paying, to decide on which samples they want. For information, call (352) 596-9236.
