Volunteer for tax preparation with United Way in Brooksville

BROOKSVILLE

Volunteer to help file taxes with United Way

The United Way of Hernando County is seeking individuals to become VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) volunteers in the Brooksville area. In partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, the VITA program provides free federal tax preparation assistance to people. Volunteers are needed to serve as greeters, tax return preparers and site coordinators. Preferred volunteers would have an accounting background or experience filing their own taxes, be computer literate and possess good communication skills. In order to prepare tax returns, all registered VITA volunteers must complete a short training to become IRS-certified. Adopt-a-thons offer cats, kittens

Home at Last Pet Adoptions hosts adopt-a-thons from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays at Petco, 7223 Coastal Blvd. The nonprofit organization has a variety of home-fostered cats and kittens of all ages. All are spayed or neutered, have had age-appropriate vaccinations, have tested negative for feline leukemia and AIDS, have microchips and have been treated for parasites. Donate that old prom dress

The Kiwanis Club of the Nature Coast is seeking donations of gently used prom, bridesmaid and homecoming gowns and dresses for its "Passion for Fashion" Prom Expo and Fashion Show. Shoes and purses are also needed. Those who make a donation will receive a free ticket to the event on Feb. 2. Video games for teens at the library

The Hernando County Public Library System will host a Teen Gaming Afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the West Hernando/S.T. Foggia Branch Library, 6335 Blackbird Ave. Local teenagers are invited to an afternoon of games at the library, which offers a new area with comfortable furniture and various video gaming equipment.
