Woman sought in armed attempted East Lake carjacking

Woman sought in attempted carjacking

Pinellas deputies seek help in finding a woman suspected of an attempted armed carjacking. About 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, a 63-year-old woman was returning to her car in the Target parking lot at 900 East Lake Road when the suspect approached her and ordered her inside the car. Once inside, deputies say, the suspect began to beat the woman with a gun and tried to steal her car. As the two struggled over the keys, the car owner set off the alarm. People nearby called 911, but the suspect fled before deputies arrived. The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries described as nonlife-threatening. The suspect is described as a white female about 25 years old and about 5 feet 6. She was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black gloves. Anyone with information can call Detective Carl Vitro at (727) 582-6200 or anonymously report to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477.

Man injured in mobile home fire

Firefighters were alerted to a mobile home blaze about 6 a.m. Thursday, and they had it under control in about half an hour, officials said. Thomas Karns, 42, was taken to Morton Plant Hospital for breathing difficulty, Clearwater officials said. The fire happened at Lot 220 of the New Ranch Mobile Home Park, 2291 Gulf to Bay Blvd. Sheriff's officials say there is no indication this fire has any connection to another fire in the same mobile home park on Dec. 2.

Motorcycle rider dies, driver injured

A Land O'Lakes woman died and a Brandon man was critically injured when a car crashed into the motorcycle they were riding Wednesday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers said a 2006 Hyundai Sonata driven by Gustav Harder, 89, of Palm Harbor was turning west on U.S. 19 from Oakdale Medical, 32615 U.S. 19, about 10 p.m. The motorcycle, driven by Michael Gizzi, 42, of Brandon was going north in the outside center lane. Harder turned in front of the motorcycle, throwing Gizzi and his passenger, Kim Roberts, 42, of Land O'Lakes, off the bike. Troopers said Roberts was wearing a small half-shell helmet, but received critical injuries and was taken to Mease Countryside Hospital, where she died a short time later. Gizzi, who was not wearing a helmet, was flown to Bayfront Medical Center with critical injuries. Harder was not injured.
