Woman's body found in Mandalay Channel

Body of woman, 85, found in Mandalay Channel

CLEARWATER — Authorities have identified the body of an 85-year-old woman found early Monday in Mandalay Channel.

Peggy Abelson, who lived at Cavalier Resort Motel, 64 Bay Esplanade, Clearwater, was discovered about 10 feet from shore about 7 a.m. Clearwater police spokeswoman Joelle Castelli said a resident of 521 Mandalay Ave., a condo complex that faces the waterway, pulled Abelson out. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Castelli said foul play did not appear to be involved. An autopsy will be performed.

"She was like a grandmother to us," said Tam McDonough, property manager of Cavalier motel, whose husband helped police identify Abelson.

McDonough said Abelson was terminally ill and under hospice care. She said Abelson was hard of hearing and rarely left the property. Abelson had several adult children, McDonough said.

NEW YORK — The front office did its part Thursday, making two trades to bolster the roster in a push for the playoffs. But the Rays didn't follow up in a frustrating 6-5 11-inning loss to the Yankees.

Rays reliever Andrew Kittredge stands on the mound and can only watch as the Yankees’ Brett Gardner starts to circle the bases after his walkoff home run leading off the 11th inning.
  5. Believe it! Rays are buyers, trade for reliever Dan Jennings and 1B/DH Lucas Duda

NEW YORK — Dan Jennings' ability to render lefty hitters useless with a sinker that gets beaten into the ground and Lucas Duda's power to blast baseballs off and over outfield walls should make the Rays better.
