New motorcycle repair shop revs into Seffner

SEFFNER — A Western style storefront has moved into town, but don’t be confused by its saloon look or its national name.

The only gun slinging taking place at Cody’s American Motorcycle Repair involve tools and after 13 years in business, owner Cody Spencer has the experience to tinker with any bike – foreign or domestic.

"We work on everything," said Spencer, overlooking a 1968 BSA from the UK, an old school and new school Harley Davidson and a Big Dog on his shop floor. "We get them in and out believe me."

Spencer said he started his business on a shoestring budget out of his home garage in DeLand before moving to Hillsborough County and opening shop in Riverview off of U.S. 301.

He has spent the past eight years in Lithia but just recently moved to Brandon and brought his business to 501 W Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, a location that had been a tire shop, auto glass store and florist in recent years.

The various locations haven’t seemed to hurt business, according to Spencer who has customers come from as far away as his native DeLand as well as Orange, Polk and Manatee counties.

Spencer has never launched a website and never advertised — his business is built solely on word of mouth — that started with him handing out business cards and flyers at bike shows and events.

"I’ve got a good following," said Spencer, who turns 64 in January. "I was a one-man show for years before I finally hired help."

Ron Galletti, who has produced the Born to Ride television show for 23 years and publishes a motorcycle magazine with the same name says Spencer is a real deal biker who understands what it takes to keep motorcycles running.

"He has the passion of the true biker lifestyle from when he wakes up to when he goes to sleep," Galletti said. "I wish him all the best in his new location."

Even though Spencer said he has noticed a change in the economy over the past decade, he hasn’t increased his rates. He just conformed to the market – focusing more on maintenance and less on customization now.

"We build custom bikes, customize, service, tires, brakes, anything and everything when it comes to motorcycles," he said. "We get everything from Harleys to Indians. It’s a fast turnover shop."
