TAMPA — Swoop, a new low-cost Canadian airline, is starting air service between Tampa International Airport and Hamilton, Ontario on Oct. 20.

Flights will be scheduled Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from TIA to Hamilton International Airport, which is about midway between Toronto and the Niagara Falls-Buffalo, N.Y. area.

Swoop, a subsidiary that WestJet Airlines launched in June, picked Tampa as one of its first five U.S. destinations, along with Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Phoenix and Las Vegas. On Swoop, the fare includes only the seat. Passengers pay extra for carry-on baggage, checked baggage, priority boarding, seats with extra legroom, food, drink and in-flight entertainment.

In a statement released through the airline, Tampa International Airport CEO Joe Lopano welcomed Swoop "as a new option for our many Canadian visitors."

"Canada continues to be (TIA's) largest international market served with 46 percent passenger growth over the past four years," Lopano said.
