Growth at Frontier, Spirit, Southwest driving Tampa International Airport passenger traffic

TAMPA — Strong gains at Frontier, Spirit and Southwest airlines are driving Tampa International Airport’s passenger traffic to record levels.

For the six months ending in March:

• Frontier Airlines saw 116.7 percent growth with its total number of passengers more than doubling to 683,776. Frontier added 12 new flights from Tampa during that time.

• Spirit Airlines, which added six flights, saw 45.5 percent growth, with 845,942 passengers.

• Southwest Airlines, Tampa International’s largest carrier, grew 4.3 percent to more than 3.5 million passengers.

During those six months, TIA’s international passenger traffic grew 12.3 percent. The number of domestic passengers rose 9.6 percent.

March was the airport’s biggest-ever month , with nearly 2.2 million passengers, 10.8 percent more than March 2017.
