Dead man found in Tampa International elevator shaft

TAMPA — The Tampa International Airport Police Department is investigating an "unexplained death" that occurred at the airport just after midnight Friday, according to airport spokeswoman Janet Zink.

Maintenance workers discovered the body of Chad Wolfe, 31, of West Newton, Pa., at 10:45 a.m. in an elevator shaft on the blue side of the airport terminal building.

Wolfe arrived in Tampa on Delta flight 2233 that landed around 12:15 a.m. Friday, according to airport officials. Soon afterward, he entered an elevator shaft on the third floor of the main terminal. The elevator was stopped on the seventh floor of the short-term parking garage at the time, officials said.

Around 3 a.m. a nearby elevator stopped working. Later in the morning, when maintenance workers started repairs on the malfunctioning elevator, officials said they discovered Wolfe's body.

The medical examiner took custody of Wolfe's body and will determine the cause of death. There were no signs of foul play, Zink said.
