Al Austin's departure from the board that governs Tampa International Airport not only frees up a spot on the five-member board, it will also leave the chairman's seat open.
The position never goes to Tampa's mayor, currently Bob Buckhorn, or the Hillsborough County Commission's representative (Commissioner Victor Crist), who sit on the board. And the as-yet-unnamed new member is unlikely to move right into the chairman's job.
So that leaves Dr. Joseph Diaco and Steven Burton. Burton wouldn't turn it down.
"If the board's inclined to ask me, I'd be more than happy to do it," said Burton, managing partner of the Tampa office law office of Broad and Cassell.
Appointed to the unpaid board by Gov. Charlie Crist in 2009, Burton was among the most vocal critics of TIA's former executive director, Louis Miller, and is one of the biggest backers of new airport boss Joe Lopano.
