Starting this weekend, Delta passengers will be able to message friends and family during their flights, for free.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian announced on Wednesday morning that the airline will now allow passengers to send free in-flight messages.

People will be able to use apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and iMessage on Wi-Fi enabled planes without paying the typically tacked on internet fees.

"Starting this weekend, any flight you're on on Delta, anywhere in the world you'll have the ability to text for free," Bastian said on "CBS This Morning" Wednesday. "We want our customers while they're flying to stay connected to their homes, to their friends."

Only messaging services that utilize Wi-Fi will work. Regular text messaging that uses cell service will still be unavailable.

Delta offers more than 15,000 daily flights and carries over 180 million passengers a year.
