A fuel tank fire at Miami International Airport has forced American Airlines to cancel all 10 scheduled flights between Tampa and Miami on Thursday. American is the only carrier with nonstop flights to that city.
Firefighters battled the fire through the night and had it under control Thursday morning. More than 90 flights were canceled at Miami International, stranding or delaying thousands of passengers, the Miami Herald reported.
American Airlines spokesman Ed Martelle told the newspaper that American was "trying to do some creative things,'' such as landing planes with a little extra fuel in Miami so they could take off and refuel at nearby airports, including Tampa International.
