Gulfport plaza shopping center gets new life

Gulfport Plaza Shopping Center, struggling without an anchor since Winn-Dixie left two years ago, has a new owner and fresh tenants. A Family Dollar and Save-A-Lot grocery will share the anchor space when the center near 49th Street and 22nd Avenue S reopens after renovations. Southern Commercial Developers of Tampa bought the 45,000-square-foot plaza from Hadi Adams in March for $1.3 million. Fred Metcalf, community development director, said the city was happy to have them. "We wanted to get a grocery store," he said. A June grand opening is planned. Tenant space is available. Call Brittiany Jefferson at (770) 391-1233.

The managing partner of Vintage Ultra Lounge plans a ground-floor restaurant and bar, plus a 10,000-square-foot 19th-floor club and lounge with three open-air terraces.

Networking event set at the Hurricane

Mix up some beach business from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hurricane Seafood Restaurant, 809 Gulf Way. "We'll be able to see a grand sunset, as well as having hors d'oeuvres and some great networking," said Roxanne Anderson, membership director of the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce.
