ST. PETERSBURG

John Pivar, known among area foodies for his seven-year stint as the Renaissance Vinoy executive chef, has decided to open a gourmet market near downtown St. Petersburg.

Pivar, who also has written two cookbooks and lives in Largo, said he is close to securing a site for a new market on Fourth Street. He envisions something similar to Fancy's, a gourmet market on Fourth Street that was open for more than 20 years before closing in 2003.

While acknowledging that "talk is cheap," Pivar said, "I cannot tell you how many people say to me, 'If you open a (market like) Fancy's, we'll be there every day.' "

Any market he opens would place a big emphasis on prepared meals, he said.

Don your pajamas, shop at Sunrise Sale

There's a good chance that you'll find all sorts of bargains Thursday at the Sunrise Sale sponsored by the Downtown Business Association.

Wear your pajamas or donate new children's sizes for the nonprofit Pajama Program, and you'll qualify for additional discounts and gifts from participating merchants.

The annual event was created to entice shoppers to patronize downtown businesses. This is the 35th year.

The sale starts at 6:43 a.m. For additional information, call 821-6443, ext. 18.

Mmm, sounds good. Something like Fancy's would be wonderful. Fancy's was a great place to stop and pick up vegetable side dishes, or an entree, for a quick supper. Plus they always had good, inexpensive red wines from France.
