Eye-care clinic expanding into Carrollwood

CARROLLWOOD — A multimillion-dollar eye-care facility is scheduled to open in Carrollwood this spring.

A $2.5-million renovation and remodeling of the former Regions Bank building at Dale Mabry Highway and Fletcher Avenue will make way for the fifth location of St. Luke's Cataract & Laser Institute, according to a notice that was e-mailed this week to the St. Petersburg Times.

This would be the first location in Hillsborough County.

St. Luke's' officials were not available for comment in time for North of Tampa's deadline.

The 6,200-square-foot facility will feature a full-time cataract surgeon for consultations, a revolving team of ophthalmologist specialists and another 15 assistants, according to the e-mail.

St. Luke's specializes in cataract and lens-implant, refractive, vitreo-retinal, glaucoma, and eyelid and facial-cosmetic surgeries.

While consultations will be made in Carrollwood, patients will have surgeries at the Tarpon Springs facility.

The eye-care center was founded by ophthalmologist James P. Gills, who developed the Trinity subdivision.
