Doctor's role in cancer care merits an award

Peter W. Blumencranz has been awarded the 2008 Cancer Liaison Physician Outstanding Performance Award from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. Blumencranz, who received the award for his leadership and dedication to cancer care, is surgical oncologist and medical director of the Morton Plant Mease Comprehensive Breast Program.

In 2007, Blumencranz led the national clinical trial for GeneSearch, the first gene-based test to detect the spread of breast cancer into lymph nodes. Morton Plant Hospital became the first hospital in the United States to use GeneSearch, which can determine in just minutes — while a patient is in surgery — if cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.

Peek into the 2009 economy next month

Will the 2009 economy be another wild roller-coaster ride?

Hear what some industry leaders think when the Largo/Mid-Pinellas Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Largo Library Foundation present "Focus on 2009: A Tampa Bay Economic Forecast." It will take place at 3 p.m. Nov. 20 at Largo Public Library, 120 Central Park Drive.

Robert Trigaux, St. Petersburg Times business columnist, will be moderator. The keynote address is "The Effects on Sports in the Local Economy" by Bob Sullivan, president of the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee. He will offer insight into what we can expect when the event comes to Tampa Bay in February.

The cost is $20 and seating is limited to 300. To purchase tickets, visit the Largo Public Library or the chamber at 151 Third St. NW in Largo. For more information, call 584-2321.
