'60 Fiat Abarth-Zagato
My first new car was a 1960 Italian Abarth-Zagato. The car weighed just under 1,200 pounds and had a 750cc engine. Despite having only 43 horsepower, it had a top speed of almost 100 mph. The Zagato body was aluminum and hand built. At the time it sold for 3 million lire, which was all of $3,200 U.S. I was 17 and it was this car that I drove to win my first trophies running autocrosses in central Maryland. This was the beginning of my racing career. I went on to win the B Production Championship racing Corvettes in SCCA at Marlboro Motor Raceway in Maryland, and later in the IMSA Camel GT series.
