My First Car: '41 Buick sedan, Jeanne Frymire, 98, Safety Harbor

'41 Buick sedan

My husband and I loved it because cars were scarce after World War ll and we had been without one for a long time. This was in New Jersey. He reluctantly agreed to teach me to drive. There were no automatic transmissions then, and I had difficulty with the procedure. My husband became disgusted and suggested that we repair to a nearby bar. After a few beers, I timidly suggested that I might try again, and he agreed. It came to me in a flash. "Well, said my husband, it took a couple of Schlitz beers to teach you to drive." That was in 1946 and I have been driving ever since, accident free, and I am 98 years old.
