63 Chevy Nova Super Sport

When I was 16, I spent the summer of 1971 cutting fire breaks for the city of Concord, Calif., for $1.65 an hour. I managed to save $300, my dad threw in another $300, and I bought my first car: a 1963 Chevy Nova Super Sport with bucket seats, a center console and an automatic transmission. My second job was delivering food for a Chinese restaurant, which I did through my senior year and into my first year of college. The Chevy was a great car, still well remembered by my friends, as I ferried everyone around northern California, most notably trips to Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz and Monterey. While I owned it I rebuilt the engine myself in my parents' garage, the car was stolen one time and I replaced the transmission twice. Finally, I installed a manual transmission, which was more reliable.
