DADE CITY — Auto dealer Jim Browne, who owns two lots on the outskirts of the city, has taken over the management of Pasco Motors Buick GMC, a fixture in downtown Dade City, with plans to move it someday.
Browne said no move is imminent, and for the time being little has changed at the dealership on Seventh Street. He said the dealership is still owned by Buddy Newsome. Staffers at Pasco Motors said Newsome was out the office all week and unavailable for comment.
"There's really nothing to report at this point," Browne said. "Everything's running the same way."
If the dealership does move, it will likely be out to Patriot Chevrolet at 10741 U.S. 301. Browne also owns Citrus Chrysler Jeep Dodge at 12020 U.S. 301.
A move of Pasco Motors would then free up space for economic development in the northern part of downtown.
"It's a bittersweet kind of scenario," said John Moors, executive director of the Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce. He said Pasco Motors had been a wonderful contributor to the city, the chamber of commerce and Main Street program. "I'm sure that will continue in a new location."
He said the downtown site is a "very well-positioned piece of property" that would be attractive to many businesses.
"We'll do whatever we can do to help," he said.
