Florida insurance regulators are seeking to suspend the license of an auto insurance company connected to well-known accident attorney referral firm Ask Gary.

Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty late Thursday said an investigation determined that AGIC Inc. is in unsound financial condition with a surplus under its required $4 million. The company also was late in filing financial statements and wrongly comingled funds from other sources to raise its surplus, according to McCarty's order.

The company has 21 days to respond and remains licensed to operate in Florida in the meantime.

Ask Gary was founded by Sarasota chiropractor Gary Kompothecras, who has also been associated with a string of for-profit clinics that treat accident victims. Kompothecras is also president of AGIC. His attorney could not be reached for comment late Thursday.

The accident referral service is widely known for its 1-800-Ask Gary commercials and its former branding of the Florida State Fairgrounds amphitheater in Tampa.
