Employees of WTSP-Ch. 10 will take a week of unpaid leave before April in a cost-cutting measure aimed to avoid layoffs.
Gannett Co., the station's owner as well as publisher of USA Today and numerous other newspapers, announced the companywide measure Wednesday. Ch. 10 employs about 175 people, records show.
Gannett spokeswoman Tara Connell said many on-air reporters have individual contracts with the station and cannot be required to take leave. But they will be asked to do it in the spirit of teamwork and avoiding layoffs.
Connell said viewers shouldn't notice the cutbacks.
"The whole program is designed not to affect the operation," she said. "They shouldn't see it."
