John Thomas, the weekend morning anchor for Tampa ABC affiliate WFTS-Ch. 28, is off the air.
It's unclear at this time if Thomas is no longer with the station or if his absence is temporary. Thomas, who has worked for the ABC Action News affiliate in Tampa Bay since 1999, deleted all of his social media accounts linked to Scripps-owned WFTS this week. His profile was also deleted from the Ch. 28 news website. His personal Twitter account (@JohnThomasTV) remains active.
Thomas did not respond to requests for comment. WFTS news director Matt Brown did not respond to phone calls or emails about the matter.
Thomas was taken off air briefly in July 2010 after a drunken driving arrest. He returned to the anchor desk for the morning newscasts in December 2010.
His work at the station included helping a 6-year-old Tampa girl who suffered from an allergic condition get a service dog. He appeared in a news story in 2010 when he helped rescue a woman and child from an exploded watercraft in Apollo Beach.
Before coming to Tampa, Thomas worked in Wichita, Kan. Born in Canada, he also worked in television journalism in London, Ontario, and Saint John, New Brunswick. He has covered news and sports.
