Construction begins in Tarpon Springs on oceanography research boat (w/video)

TARPON SPRINGS — Duckworth Steel Boats began construction Wednesday on the Florida Institute of Oceanography's new $6 million research vessel, a boat that will help scientists and students study waters surrounding the state.

The boat will house two scientific labs and will replace the 46-year-old Bellows, the current boat used by researchers. Construction, paid for together by the institute, the state, the city of St. Petersburg and various universities and colleges that have used the Bellows in the past, is expected to take 12-14 months.
