What's up with all the Checkers closing?

— Paul Campbell

The number of Checkers fast food restaurants in the Tampa Bay area decreased in recent years from its peak of 50. Currently, there are 23 stores listed in the Bay area, up from 15 about six months ago.

Some have been converted to other uses, including a Chinese restaurant and Mexican Taco drive-through.

In a recent interview with the St. Petersburg Times, the company said it was looking to roughly double the number of restaurants nationwide from 840 to about 1,500.
