Daily Q&A: Why does TECO People's Gas sometimes estimate usage instead of reading the meter?

Why does TECO People's Gas sometimes use estimates to calculate my bill instead of using an actual meter reading?

Rick Morera, a spokesman for TECO, says the utility sometimes does estimate a customer's bill, based on the previous month's usage.

There can be a number of reasons for using an estimate, Morera said, including a technician calling in sick or a lack of access to the meter because of a locked fence or debris.

If an estimate is too high, the amount owed will be reduced, Morera said.
