Worrying about rising gas prices hurts job performance, according to a Florida State University report released Monday. "People concerned with the effects of gas prices were significantly less attentive on the job, less excited about going to work, less passionate and conscientious, and more tense," said Wayne Hochwarter, a professor of management at FSU's College of Business. Hochwarter surveyed 800 full-time employees this spring and found that all drove to work and had an average commute of 15 miles each way. Among his findings, 39 percent agreed with the statement "Gas prices have decreased my standard of living." Hochwarter conducted his survey when gas prices hovered around $3.50 a gallon. Gas prices in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area averaged $3.58 on Monday, according to AAA.
