New rule restricting robocalls takes effect Tuesday

Annoyed by prerecorded "robocalls" from telemarketers?

Beginning Tuesday, a new federal rule will stop telemarketers from hounding consumers with the prerecorded sales pitches and malicious marketing ploys, unless consumers agree to it in writing.

No opt out necessary. The new rule does not include sending prerecorded messages related to children's school information or from bill collectors for money people actually owe. Politicians, banks, telephone carriers and most charitable organizations also are exempt from the prohibition.

Telemarketers who violate the prohibition face penal ties of up to $16,000 per call.
