Tampa residents at risk for overpaying on gas

Tampa residents may be overpaying at the pump. A new study by GasBuddy, a price comparison app for gas, found that when gas prices are low (as they currently are), consumers are more likely to pay more than they need to for gas.

"We're in a relative period of tranquility and affordability at the pump, and so the data suggests Americans are at particular risk right now of overspending on gasoline," Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, said. "And we expect that trend to continue for some time."

Tampa residents this year have been paying anywhere from about $2.11 per gallon to $2.43 per gallon depending on the gas station they visit, the research shows. While a 31-cent discrepancy might seem high, it could be worse. The price at the pump varies by more than $1 in cities such as San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
