Tesla is gearing up to establish a presence on Florida roofs. The Palo Alto, Calif., company opened Florida pre-orders Thursday for its residential solar energy material called "Solar Roof," as well as a cost estimator. The roofing material will cost a hefty $21.85 per square foot, perhaps five to six times the cost of putting on an asphalt shingle roof.
"Homeowners can generate and consume energy in the most efficient and sustainable way possible, potentially lowering their energy costs and minimizing dependence on fossil fuels and the grid," the company said in a release.
The tiles are made of tempered glass and take about a week to install. Tesla is also offering what it says is the industry's best warranty: "The lifetime of your house or infinity, whichever comes first."
A $1,000 deposit is required to pre-order.
