TAMPA — One of ESPN's sports-themed specialty cruises is scheduled to depart from Tampa in February.
ESPN at Sea is a themed cruise that includes face time with well-known sports celebrities like former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Mike Alstott and other former NFL players including Mike Logan and Jermaine Phillips.
The five-days cruise leaves Tampa on Feb. 2 and stops in Key West and Cozumel, Mexico, before returning to Tampa. Prices start at $1,299. A similar seven-day cruise is scheduled out of Fort Lauderdale on the same day.
The cruise out of Tampa will have a football and soccer theme, billed as "Football vs. Futbol." The cruise hopes to attract 500 passengers to the Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas, which regularly docks in Tampa. The ship has a capacity of 2,500, but the other passengers will not be allowed to sit with the athletes or participate in the parties and sports events.
If there is enough interest, ESPN at Sea hopes to launch more specialty cruises from Tampa.
