The deadline for homeowners to reclaim the mineral rights under their homes has been extended to March 31. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi moved the deadline Wednesday saying that only about 25 percent of the 18,000 affected homeowners had responded.
A Tampa Bay Times investigation in November found that the nation's largest home builder, D.R. Horton, had hoarded the rights beneath Tampa Bay homesites. The Times report resulted in D.R. Horton sending out letters in January to all affected Florida homeowners offering to return their severed mineral rights.
To qualify, a homeowner must have purchased a home from D. R. Horton and must still reside in the home. Each homeowner must complete the certification enclosed with the January letter and return it to D.R. Horton.
