Huge fuel-storage facility planned for Tampa port

A big, big gas station is headed for the Port of Tampa.

On Tuesday, port commissioners agreed to lease 43 acres on Hooker's Point to a Boca Raton company that plans to build a $70-million facility to store and distribute gasoline, oil and biofuels.

The facility, which will have 15 to 20 huge tanks with a combined capacity of 1.1-million barrels, will employ about 50. The Tampa Port Authority will spend $25-million to build a new berth for petroleum terminal operators and extend an existing berth.

The lease with International Oil Terminals Tampa LLC, an affiliate of International Oil Trading Co., runs for 40 years with two 20-year extension options.
