Led again by Publix, United Way Suncoast top corporate givers open wallets in 2017

The United Way Suncoast issued its annual list of 100 "Most Generous Workplaces" corporate givers in the Tampa Bay region. Once again, Publix Super Markets led the pack as the most generous workplace in the Suncoast region that, reflecting United Way's service territory, includes Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota and DeSoto counties. Following Publix was Raymond James Financial at No. 2 and Duke Energy at No. 3.

Duke made the biggest jump from No. 9 last year to capture this year's No. 3 spot after making a $1 million investment to support community empowerment at the United Way Resource Center in south St. Petersburg's Campbell Park.

Rounding out the top 10 this year are USAA, Mosaic, Enterprise Leasing, Wells Fargo, Tech Data, Macy's and Citi. Citi replaced the city of Tampa, which ranked No. 10 in 2016. Tampa slipped to No. 11. The other top 10 companies from last year are unchanged.

PAST COVERAGE: United Way salutes top corporate givers, challenges others by omission.

The main difference from 2016 is that the biggest corporate givers contributed a lot more this year.

Combined, the top ten organizations and their employees invested $16.6 million to help local communities through United Way Suncoast-affiliated programs. That's a sharp gain over last year's contribution total of $11 million.

The Most Generous Workplaces list is determined by companies' philanthropic contributions (monetary and in-kind) to and through United Way Suncoast during the previous fiscal year.
