DUNEDIN — Long-term hospital care has arrived in north Pinellas County.
BayCare Alliant Hospital has opened at Mease Dunedin Hospital, 601 Main St., and will operate as an independently run, community-based hospital with its own staff, equipment and board of directors separate from Mease and the BayCare Health System.
The 25,000-square-foot first floor of Mease has been completely renovated to provide diagnostics, medical treatment and rehabilitation for patients requiring hospital stays of 25 days or more. The 48-bed not-for-profit hospital has its own entrance and lobby.
Patients are admitted by their physicians or from hospitals, assisted living facilities, nursing homes or their own homes. Long-term acute care is covered by Medicare and other insurance plans and the hospital will accept most insurance plans.
Staff leadership includes Anita Russell, executive director; Dr. Leonard Dunn, medical director; and Karen Duffy, director of nursing.
Russell previously was manager of case management for Morton Plant Mease and Healthy Families. She has a master's degree in public health from the University of South Florida and a degree in psychology from George Washington University, Washington, D.C.
Dunn is board certified in internal and pulmonary medicine and has served the north Pinellas community for 30 years. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York and served his internship, residency and fellowship at the University of Florida.
