Florida's reputation as the retirement state likely doesn't come as a surprise to many. But what may be surprising is that a new report pegs it as only the fifth best state for retirees.

According to a Bankrate.com report released Thursday, Florida's weather and taxes made it a top location to settle down in. But what dragged it down was the state's crime rate and health care quality.

The No. 1 state for retirement was South Dakota, followed by Utah, Idaho and New Hampshire. The worst states to retire to was New York, followed by Maryland and New Mexico (tied for No. 48).
