Some low-income families filing tax returns just to get the economic stimulus rebate are getting a nice surprise: they qualify for a refund, too.
H&R Block says more than a third of the taxpayers it has helped who weren't required to file ended up qualifying for a refund averaging $1,500.
Those most likely to qualify for a refund have dependent children or grandchildren, making them eligible to claim the child tax credit and, in some cases, the earned income credit.
The IRS will begin sending out rebate checks next month. To be included in the first round of payments, you need to file your return by midnight Tuesday.
