Florida consumer confidence still hovers at post-recession high

Consumer confidence among Floridians remained flat in August, hovering at a post-recession high of 82 for the third consecutive month, according to a University of Florida survey released Tuesday.

Chris McCarty, director of UF's Survey Research Center in the Bureau of Economic and Business Research, said the reading is much improved from the depths of the recession, but "it is also not a number associated with strong economic growth."

The monthly survey is benchmarked to 1966, which means a value of 100 represents the same level of confidence as for that year. The index ranges from a low of 2 to a high of 150.

    Gas prices are on a downward tear post-hurricane. Tampa Bay fell to $2.34 per gallon on Sunday, down 10 cents over the week, according to AAA, The Auto Club Group. Across the state, gas fell 7 cents over the same period to average $2.47 per gallon.
