Retirees should check the mail for $250 government checks

Attention Florida retirees: be careful tossing out junk mail over the next few weeks if you don't want to lose $250.

More than 50 million retirees nationwide, including more than 3.2 million in Florida, can expect to receive $250 economic stimulus payments from the government this month.

The payments are part of the $787 billion package of spending and tax cuts enacted in February to help ignite the economy. They will go to people who receive Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, railroad retirement or veteran's disability benefits.

"People don't need to contact us. There's no action they need to take," Social Security spokeswoman Patti Patterson said. "The checks will automatically come."

But if you don't receive your payment by June 4, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact your local Social Security office.
