The Society of American Business Editors and Writers has honored PolitiFact senior correspondent Louis Jacobson for a series of stories on the 2016 campaign.
Jacobson, 46, won for economics coverage in the small staff category of SABEW's annual Best in Business competition. (SABEW defines small staff as fewer than 50 and PolitiFact has 10.) His entries focused on the minimum wage, tariffs, unemployment numbers and the U.S. debt.
The judges said Jacobson "presented solid, timely analysis of economic rhetoric during a presidential campaign in which fact and fiction were hard to distinguish. Months before fact-checking candidates became a routine feature on the business page, these stories took both parties' nominees to task for politicizing economic data. The dissection of Donald Trump's comments about renegotiating U.S. debt was an insightful example of a complex topic explained in an accessible way, supported by multiple experts."
