Land broker disputes reports of apartment deal near Straz Center for the Performing Arts

TAMPA — A land broker disputed reports Wednesday of an imminent deal for hundreds of new apartments near downtown's Straz Center for the Performing Arts.

The Tampa Tribune reported that the owner of two nearby parking lots was "in the final stages" of closing on a deal with an unnamed developer intending to build a mid-rise apartment building and parking deck.

But Ryan Sampson, the Eshenbaugh Land Company broker-associate marketing the lots, said Wednesday that any potential deal was "a long shot" that could take years, if ever, to complete.

"I wouldn't say anything's close or even imminent," Sampson said. "There's no story. There's nothing there. There's nothing going on."

Denholtz Associates, a New Jersey-based real estate investor, owns the two lots as well as The Times Building, the 10-story office center nearby that houses a bureau of the Tampa Bay Times.

TAMPA — The original developers of Channelside Bay Plaza at first wanted the name of the complex to include the word "Garrison." That would have fit, because the center turned out to be fort-like, inwardly focused and unwelcoming.
