Hyde Park Village preps for new tenants at old LA Fitness space in South Tampa

TAMPA — Hyde Park Village is priming for new tenants to fill the large hole that LA Fitness left behind about a year ago.

It appears the former gym will be transformed into several smaller retail parcels with an updated facade, according to architectural and construction applications filed with the city this month.

Spokeswoman Lisa Brock confirmed WS Development is preparing for new tenants in the space, but did not say which businesses could be moving into the new spots nor give any timetable.

It’s been five years since Boston’s WS Development bought the once struggling open-air mall for $45 million. After massive renovations, it has turned into a South Tampa hot spot for eating and luxury shopping.

The applications WS filed asks the city for "substantial change approval" to renovate "Block D," the property between South Village Circle and Swann Avenue.

The bulk of the property had been an LA Fitness, with stores West Elm and Brooks Brothers behind it. The plans call for those two stores to be left alone but the remaining 30,000-plus square feet to be divided into six retail and restaurant spaces — the largest about 12,400 square feet and the smallest about 2,000 square feet.

The proposal includes updating the outside of the building with white-wash brick, gray and black accents and aluminium canopies above the retail slots.

Nearby the "H Block," on the corner of S Dakota Avenue and Snow Avenue, is on its way to becoming open-workspace Station House’s Tampa location.

Also on Snow Avenue, a local restaurateur has plans to open a Roman-style pizza place — rather than previously announced chicken-and-donut shop Better Byrd.

WS has been overhauling much of the 300,000-square-foot property since 2015 as part of its "beautification plan," which it plans to have completed when the Station House property opens sometime in 2019.
