Walmart remodels Tampa Supercenter, peek inside of its new stores

Times Staff Writer

The Walmart Supercenter in northern Tampa will reopen Friday after undergoing one of 12 local remodels planned for the year.

The made-over store on 19910 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. has new lighting, 10 added self-checkout lanes, and a pickup tower — a robotic locker that works like a giant vending machine to retrieve products which customers ordered online.

"We’re really trying to make (people’s) shopping experience with us as seamless as possible — whether in store or online," said store manager Arnetta Hill in a statement, "and we’re excited to introduce this new technology and a better in-store shopping experience to even more customers in the Tampa Bay area."

In April, Walmart announced it planned to spend about $200 million across the state updating a fleet of stores. The remodels come at a competitive time in retail, with Amazon’s growth the market pushing retailers to create new ways to engage and keep customers.

The renovated stores, like the one on Bruce B. Downs, also have an updated electronics section with hands-on displays like those at Apple or Microsoft stores.

In addition to fresh paint and new signage storewide, Walmart updated its pharmacy to include an express lane. The store’s clothing department has renovated fittings rooms and carries brands such as Time and Tru and Wonder Nation, which Walmart launched earlier this year.

Walmart also announced the Walmart location in Hudson on U.S. 19 has added a new pick-up tower to its store. Walmart loacations at 4302 W. Gandy Boulevard and 7011 W Waters Ave. in Tampa and the Supercenter in Gibsonton were remodeled earlier this year.

The north Tampa Walmart has planned a small ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7 a.m. Friday to open the upgraded store.
