State government may be hurting for money. But who would have thought Gov. Charlie Crist would turn to Wal-Mart to do a two-day energy audit of the 22-story state capitol complex? Don't expect Wal-Mart to refit the restrooms with the cheapest recycled toilet paper from Sam's Club or outsource the Legislature's switchboard. Rather, it's another chapter in Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s offensive to prove it's a leader in energy conservation and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions by sharing tactics that cut electric bills in some experimental supercenters by 20 to 50 percent. The Bentonville, Ark., retailer volunteered to audit 19 other state capitols in a program created with the National Governors Association. Wal-Mart engineers will look for ways to make lighting, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems more efficient. States are not obligated to do the work, which is designed to pay for itself in five years in reduced bills. "Anytime a national retailer falls right in line with the governor's commitment to sustainability and energy conservation, he's all for it," said spokesman Aaron Ivey.
