Publix Super Markets Inc. has agreed to buy half the Albertsons stores left in Florida, including all but a handful in the Tampa Bay area, as a fiercely competitive grocery war claims another casualty.

Signaling a major retreat from one of the state's biggest markets, the sale of 49 of 93 Albertsons across the state includes getting rid of 17 of 22 stores in the Tampa Bay area. Among the surviving stores are one on Gulf-to-Bay in Clearwater, one in Largo Mall and one on North Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa.

The sell-off means 5,000 workers, including 1,700 in the bay area, stand to lose their jobs. Albertsons officials declined to outline what sort of severance plan, if any, it will offer.

"We're hoping Publix will hire many of them, but we intend to remain in business in Florida," said Shane McEntarffer, spokesman for Albertsons. Publix will hold job fairs within weeks to interview those who might be interested in switching.

Albertsons' executives plan to continue supplying their remaining business from a huge distribution center in Plant City. But a distribution center typically needs to support 40 to 50 stores to be profitable. So Albertsons may continue to shrink its Florida presence as buyout opportunities arise.

Neither company disclosed the sale price or terms, but the sale is slated to be completed by September.

The sale will further cement Publix's position as the state's market share leader even as Wal-Mart continues to catch up. The Lakeland chain stands likely to add most of Albertsons' 4 percent share of the Florida food retailing dollar to its current 40 percent.

Publix is buying four Albertsons in Pensacola, Publix's first presence there as it stretches its reach to the perimeter of Mobile, Ala. Signs of the deal became apparent recently when Publix started signing deals for new stores in the Panhandle as far west as the bridge leading to Pensacola.

"We are always looking for good locations, especially in markets we don't serve, which made this a very good deal for us," said Maria Brous, spokeswoman for Publix, which had 936 stores spread over five states before the acquisition.

The sale also signals a musical chairs shakeup in grocery store locations because several stores Publix is buying are within a block or two of existing Publix locations, such as in South Pasadena.

Rival grocers — including Winn-Dixie, Whole Foods and Sweetbay Supermarket — have been sizing up the Albertsons locations for more than a year. So it's likely some of the Publix purchases are defensive moves to keep competitors from buying them.

Unlike most grocers that lease their stores, Albertsons owns its real estate outright and has built one of the most formidable supermarket portfolios in Florida over the past 32 years. So Publix is paying a premium for a deed rather than just buying out leases. Publix will not make decisions on what to do with duplicate stores until the sale is complete in September, but most stores acquired will be remodeled under the Publix banner.

Now a distant fifth place in food retailing market share in the Tampa Bay area behind Publix and Wal-Mart, Albertsons was struggling well before its parent company was broken in two and sold two years ago. SuperValu Inc. bought 1,800 stores elsewhere that it considered the easiest to turn around.

The 655 unwanted stores in seven states including Florida were acquired by Cerberus Capital Management and operated as a private company called Albertsons LLC. Cerberus has whittled those 655 stores to 313.

Nothing cleaner than Publix. And buy-one-get-one....no they don't jack up the price for that. Been buying there for years. Meat is better quality also. A lot of training for employees...I see they are having job fair for AlB personnel. Pretty fair
by Ann Jun 11, 2008 11:51 AM
It would be great for publix to check the Wegman Super Markets up north Those are SUPERMARKETS!!! Publix could learn a lot and improve to Wegman standards!!!!! Nothing here compares to those or HEB in Texas. Have a lot to learn

I work for Alberstons in the meat dept and this sucks! We don't know if we will have jobs in 6 weeks. We found out MINUTES before the rest of the world did. Publix can't hire us all and we know that. And we don't put any fillers in our meat its real.
by Bill Jun 11, 2008 9:27 AM
I for one refuse to support the Publix grab at my wallet because they really DON't care about anybody but themselves and do their beat to eliminate competition. Unfair? Or just getting too big for their own good?
by Adam Jun 11, 2008 9:27 AM
On my previous post.....my Albertsons comments are directed to the store pictured in the article. Shopping there is barely a hair better than shopping at Pinellas Park Wal-Mart.
by Adam Jun 11, 2008 9:27 AM
We have Sweetbay, Albertsons and Publix all within the same distance of us. I will not be sad to see Albertsons go. Their prices are higher than Publix and their service sucks - no more than 2-3 registers open at a time even during busy periods.
by Dick Jun 11, 2008 9:26 AM
Sorry they won't be selling the store in Largo Masll. saw a large rat in the store, but when Im told them about it, they didn'tseem to be concerned.
by NONAME Jun 11, 2008 9:26 AM
I work at store 4338 the ablertsons on belcher and east bay and am shocked at this news but will apply for publix, we all in this store have a good attitide and hope for the best
by Elaine Jun 10, 2008 8:54 PM
What a shame...now we're giving up our choice on where to do our grocery shopping?? Gas;taxes;insurance;utilities..when is this going to stop! Now we have to pay more for groceries!! Publix WILL NOT be "Shopping Is A Pleasure" for me anymore.
by EB Jun 10, 2008 8:54 PM
Does this make any "cents" - no dollars and that's what Publix is all about a whole lot of them catering to people who have it all - please reconsider the effect you'll have on the middle class and low income who cannot afford the outrageous prices!!
by No More Publix Jun 10, 2008 8:51 PM
I used to shop at Publix until I tried Sweetbay. Now I am a faithful shopper at Sweetbay.I literally save almost 10 bucks a week at Sweetbay.I used to spend $150-$175 per wk. at Publix. Now I get the EXACT same things at Sweetbay for $140 per wk.
by Mike Jun 10, 2008 8:49 PM
I drive past the Albertson's to get to my Publix. It'll be nice to be closer. Albertsons is disorganized - butter next to the motor oil and ice cream on the condiment aisle. No wonder they gave up;their customers were dizzy from running in circles
by BroEli Jun 10, 2008 8:47 PM
The game here was to buy locations. Hopefully, Albertsons got a good deal.
by TOM Jun 10, 2008 6:57 PM
By Fred mentioned how good they used to be, but there was a time when the district ofc was in Orlando commanded by Jumpin Jack Sheehan and the employees AND the vendors were not treated very well. What goes around comes around.
by Beverly Jun 10, 2008 6:55 PM
I really prefer Albertsons to Publix, they stay open longer and have better prices. Publix is known for the older patrons and people that are willing to pay to shop there. I will drive futher to Walmart 1st before I shop there. And I hate Walmart!
by Sarah Jun 10, 2008 6:53 PM
I'm not sure where I will be shopping after this transition, but it will not be Publix. The attitude of the management at the stores leave a lot to be desired. I haven't shopped at a Publix for 10 years and I don't intend to start. Bye--Albertson's
by J Jun 10, 2008 5:36 PM
Maybe instead of expansion they should work on the quality of less stores and stop stocking shelves during the day. They use to do this at night. It is dangerous and makes shopping with young children veyr difficult.
by Evan Jun 10, 2008 5:36 PM
More clean stores to choose from, great. Also, it really is buy one get one free (prices don't cange for those sales)
by barbara Jun 10, 2008 5:24 PM
publix only plans to make an additional 8-10 stores total in the tampabay area. most of the albertsons will be cleaned and remodeled then the publix closest to them will "move". why do you think publix only bought stores that own their property!
by Paul Jun 10, 2008 5:02 PM
We are sorry to hear this. We always enjoy our shopping at Albertson's. We will have to wait and see which stores remanin in our area. We also enjoy shopping at Publix but like the competion and variety of several stores.
by Roland Jun 10, 2008 5:01 PM
I'm another of those people that will miss Albertsons. Publix- unlike Albertson's -is geared to upper middle class people and among other things its bakery goods are awfully expensive.
by NICHOLAS Jun 10, 2008 5:01 PM
I HATE PUBLIX BUYING ALBERTSONS. I PASS 2 PUBLIX TO GO TO ALBERTSONS. PUBLIX CANNOT COMPARE IN MEAT QUALITY AND PRICE. IE PUBLIX STORE IS 10-15% MORE THAN ALBERTSONS. THEIR SALES EXCEED PUBLIX AND DOUBLES PRICES BEFORE 2 FOR ONE. SORRY ALBERTSONS.
by Marie Jun 10, 2008 4:58 PM
The 30+ years I lived in Largo/Seminole area I shopped at Publix. How I wish there were a Publix where I live now. Publix stores are very clean, products the best, prices reasonable, excellent specials, employees at Bardmoor store always friendly.
by Nana Jun 10, 2008 4:30 PM
So glad Publix will be close to me---The store on West Bay was dirty. I could hardly stand to go in that store.
by Doug Jun 10, 2008 4:20 PM
Our Albertsons is one of the nicest stores in the area and is clean, well managed and has friendly associates. We shop both Albertsons and 2 nearby Publix stores. We will miss the convenience and value of Albertsons and their friendly Staff.
by Donna Jun 10, 2008 4:20 PM
I like shopping at Albertsons they have great sale items. Publix on the other hand is also great. They have the best produce, a bit over priced but it's worth it. The key factor about Publix is the staff...FRIENDLY. Something the other store lacks
by Frank Jun 10, 2008 1:35 PM
I hope Publix buys Wal-Mart next!
by Elena Jun 10, 2008 1:11 PM
I don't like Publix because they say buy one get one free, but they jack the price up to twice it normal price, so it is really not free. I hate that. Albertsons has great meat and chicken prices.
by Glenn Jun 10, 2008 1:11 PM
I've always been amused by the cult-like following Publix has. It's just a store, folks. No Albertsons in my area but we shop most of the others, getting most of our staples at Sav-A-Lot. Saving money is important, especially with the price of gas.
by Dwayne Jun 10, 2008 1:11 PM
Goodbye affordable snow crab!
by Christina Jun 10, 2008 1:11 PM
Albertson's can be very expensive on some things. I shop different stores for different things. Publix's meat prices are SKY HIGH (CRAZY), but Albertson's meat deals can't be beat! But there are quite a few things cheaper at Publix too.
by Alice Jun 10, 2008 1:11 PM
Will Publix move out of Seminole Mall into the Albertson's building across the street ?
by Sharon Jun 10, 2008 1:11 PM
Publix sells real meat, no fillers mixed in. That's why it costs more. Other than meat and the bakery, I find that I spend less when I shop at Publix than Albertsons or Winn-Dixie. It depends on what you buy though. Publix IS clean.
by Sam Jun 10, 2008 11:48 AM
I shop at Save-A-Lot..and bag my own groceries.. I cannot afford Publix. I do go to Publix for bread and Bday cakes.. I eat well!!
by Chris Jun 10, 2008 11:43 AM
Publix selected the strategic stores and will reopen 40 or so. This has been in the works since January. Alb #4333 is its #1 store and now owned by publix. Sweetbay was looking at these 40 stores for expansion.
