Aldi, the German no-frills grocer moving aggressively into Central Florida, is putting its first outlet in St. Petersburg in a remodeled Food Lion at 2900 34th St. S. Set to open this fall along with seven Aldis in Pinellas County, the store will take up about a third of the 54,400-square-foot center that has struggled to stay full since it opened in 1989. The storefront most recently housed a furniture store and a church. Some tenants, who have been renting month to month, will be replaced over time now that 60 percent of the center's space is spoken for and improvements are coming. The owners are looking for a casual sit-down restaurant chain. "The neighborhood hit bottom, and now I think 34th Street S is going to become the next Fourth Street N," said Frank Bozikovich of Commerical Partners Realty, a Broadwaters resident who manages the center for its Orlando owner. "The Wal-Mart nearby showed this is the retail destination for south St. Petersburg all the way to Tierra Verde."

The prices they charge over here are really low compared to big brand stores, you just have to try their goods and buy the ones you like, we can buy French cheeses and wines at ALDI cheaper than in France, give them a try they are OK,

4th St N is a totally seperate market. The southside is ready to clear out the old dead centers and move forward. Pete-all the tenants you mentioned should have locations on southside as well. The tourist on the beach can reach the 34th St. S market

Sounds like someone stumping for the increase of retail and housing to make the argument for the sale of the Trop. I don't buy it. There is some new, but still more empty or doing poorly than booming. NO NEW BALLPARK.

Pete - where are these empty malls you're talking about? I see nothing but successful businesses and new ones about to open. Carrabas, Outback, Starbucks, boutiques, high end salons and office space - looks to me like things are going well there.

4th St N is full of new or newly renovated empty strip malls. Is that what you want for 34th St S? Hard to believe.
