Publix thinks premium price worth it for Albertsons

Publix Super Markets Inc. agreed to pay top dollar — more than $10-million per store — for about half the remaining Albertsons outlets in Florida, according to an SEC filing.

By agreeing to fork out about $500-million for 49 Albertsons locations, the Lakeland grocer is helping Albertsons owners at Cerberus Capital Management get back almost half the $1.1-billion they paid for 655 Albertsons stores two years ago.

Publix's $500-million acquisition is expected to be completed Sept. 9. Then Publix will start renovations that could take anywhere from a few weeks to 18 months, depending on the condition of the store. Publix plans to reopen all of them as well as virtually all of a dozen duplicate Tampa Bay Publix locations that are as close as across the street.

When the dust settles, the Publix store count would increase in the bay area from 96 to about 118 by the end of 2009, including new and replacement stores already in the pipeline.

Publix, which hopes to add most of Albertsons' 8 percent share of the Tampa Bay retail food market to its current 38 percent share, thinks the premium price is worth it. Publix has used a similar saturation strategy in South Florida, where it now holds more than 60 percent of the market.

"We are always looking for top locations that make us more convenient to our customers," said Maria Brous, Publix spokeswoman. "A lot of negotiation went into this deal."

Publix plans to complete the purchase without taking on debt or slowing its own $352-million annual new store and remodeling effort.

Publix paid a premium partly because, unlike most grocers who lease their stores, Albertsons owns the real estate. But even by that measure Publix paid more to avoid leaving enough good spots on the market to create instant or increased access to the Florida grocery market for big national rivals like Kroger Co., Safeway Inc. or Wal-Mart.

"That's about twice what I expected," said Patrick Berman, who heads the retail practice at Cushman & Wakefield in Tampa. "For $10-million they could buy the real estate and build a new store from the ground up."

Cerberus, a private equity firm that also controls Chrysler, has closed or sold about half of its Albertsons stores in other states since the 2006 purchase. That includes 132 stores in Northern California, 23 in Oklahoma and a warehouse in Fort Worth, Texas. Prices and terms were not disclosed. There will be 44 Albertsons left operating in Florida after the sale to Publix.

Albertsons ads get state scrutiny

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum opened a deceptive trade practices investigation into Albertsons. The question is whether advertising Albertsons used to promote prices at its Florida stores not being sold made it clear that those prices would not be honored at a liquidator's "inventory blowout" sale staged to clear out the 49 Albertsons being closed.

Without manufacturers rebates or promotional price backing, the liquidator raised prices to Albertsons regular "everyday" prices, then took a discount of about 10 percent of most groceries the first week of the sale. That led many shoppers to complain the store-closing sale prices were not much of a deal. In some cases prices were higher.

Albertsons said the ads made clear which discounts applied to which types of stores — including the three that will remain Albertsons in the Tampa Bay area.

Did everyone forget that Publix would not have bought Albertsons had it not been for sale?? As for Publix prices, grocery items are priced the same or lower then Sweetbay. Produce is a premium as it arrives at every store each morning 7 days a week

To John, the Albertsons I'm referring to was the top producing store in the county, far from going under. You go work for Publix for a 50% cut in pay. I'll talk what I know and you can speculate!

Great idea for Publix to buy some of the Albertsons, Publix will soon dominate over W/M in Florida. Albertsons is over priced and has no costumer service.

Be nice to have some new stores here. Piggly Wiggly, Tetter Harris, even Whole Foods, talking money there. I'm about Publixed out, this is a mess. Publix has cut back on employees, I saw molded habanaro peppers in the bin. I can feel the stress.

Well there is actually something better than either of the two showing up in St Pete on US 19 at Park Blvd, Walmart Neighborhood Grocery. If you have never been in one they are super nice and its all Walmart grocery pricing.

Each supermarket has it's best deals. Albertsons had great deals on meat. $1.99 for chicken breast and great steaks for $4.99. Publix rips off at almost $5.00 for chicken breast and $12.00 for steaks and the meat is not that good. Too bad for us.

Great news! The Albertsons here was awful. First thing in the door you were hit by the stench of rotten meat and it smelled like a dead body, and I told the staff so. Plus they NEVER had enough check-out lanes open to handle the traffic. Beat it!

Did anyone stop to think WHY Publix bought Albertsons? It wasn't for the locations, they bought them to close them down and eliminate competition thus when Winn Dix and Sweetbay eventually fold you'll have just Publix and Wal Mart. Enjoy HIGH prices!

How is Publix so overpriced? They have the lowest milk prices in the grocery market.SweetBay4.19...Albertsons.$4.49. Just because they have 50% more staff in their stores than the others doesn't mean everything is more. Shop the freaking ad people!

Publix commercials are great Carol. Where else do u see a company having good comercials like that about how Publix cares about costumers?? wake up and smell the cofee Publix has always had great service and those comercials are to let everyone know

They increased the prices! A friend was wanting to buy a $49 (regular price) hammock for weeks, went into the store during the BLOWOUT SALE and it was $69!!! This is like the clearance stores you see in the mall every year. Stay far away!

When I realized what a rip Target was, ALL of my incidental shopping went to Publix. Publix is doing a great job. I do not know a thing about Albertsons and that is by choice. It looked like a border market. Dumpy and dirty.

Cut the crap guys. Publix is cheaper than albertsons so this is a good thing. Isn't it nice to be able to choose. Think about the other countries like Mynamar. Grow up. The cashiers at albertsons have been known to be not so good. Now we get better.

Publix has better house brands of nearly everything, and ALWAYS has enough items on sale to get through the week. Some things are expensive, but this only because people are too lazy to look for the sales and compare. I drive 6 miles to my Publix.

Usually when a walmart moves in everybody EXCEPT Publix loses market share. Publix is right in line on prices with most grocery chains and better than some. Ever try to get help at walmart or see a manager around? I'm not saying publix is perfect.

You save no money at the Abertsons closing as they have raised prices and prices are rang up at the register larger than what they are marked. Simple example bambo skewers marked $1.99 rang up at the register $2.39

Well, Publix is, for the most part, more expensive. They have to pay for those ridiculous commercials where the cashier cares about the guy baking cookies. What planet do those making these commercials live? Can you imagine a cashier being like that?

Albertsons has had great sales and prices for some time in Palm Harbor. Now there is no chioce in East Lake but Publix. They are over prices. I can save at least 30% shopping at Walmart Super Center on Tampa road. Its no a no go for me on this deal!

I Spoke to an Albertsons store mgr. and security guard at one of the stores. They claim Albertsons raised the prices 40% across the board, before the "BLOWOUT INVENTORY SALE" DISCOUNTS WERE APPLIED. Nice way to reward long term customers....GREED !

I'm worried about this deal. Unless Publix takes over their D.C.'s They're screwed. They can't get in weekly specials from their own D.C. how in hecks name are they going to supply almost DOUBLE the stores come 2009??

I was very disappointed in Albertons advertising. I went with my 5$ coupon and I was told I could not use it. I did not spend the $50. required and will not be back. Why waste the gas for 10 or 20%off regular price

I have been shopping at the albertsons at alderman and 19 for some time now.. and with just a few exceptions.. the prices did go up significantly since the "sale" began. I guess we should get used to those prices with publix taking over.

Any time a store goes out of business they raise the prices on things to make you think you are getting a discount. All a bunch of hype to take your hard earned money.
