Rejecting Publix job will cost Albertsons workers

As a store-closing sale winds into the final weeks at 49 Albertsons supermarkets in Florida, an unsettling wave of uncertainty has swept over 5,000 workers trying to map their job future.

"I'm completely in the dark," said Larry Houff, a 10-year veteran stocker at a Largo store.

"Everything's still up in the air," said Maria Zazveta, who hopes to transfer to one of three bay area Albertsons not closing or get a job at Publix Super Markets Inc. without missing a mortgage payment.

Some Albertsons employees have been cherry-picked by rival Sweetbay Supermarket and market newcomer Aldi. Virtually all employees have been interviewed by Publix, which is acquiring the 49 stores.

But Publix has yet to get back to most Albertsons workers with job news. And Albertsons' unusual severance package has thrown a curveball into many workers' plans.

Albertsons requires employees to interview with Publix if they hope to get a severance check. If they get a job there, they get no severance. If they turn down a Publix job within 50 miles that pays at least 80 percent of what Albertsons had been paying them, they get no severance either.

Publix agreed to tell Albertsons who takes jobs and who doesn't.

The severance is worth up to 12 weeks' pay for longtime workers. So the Catch-22 added insult to injury among Albertsons veterans already faced with losing benefits like three-week vacations, since Publix will regard them as new hires.

"Basically I'd be starting over," said a meat cutter with 20 years at a St. Petersburg Albertsons. "Then they take severance away if I go with Publix. What's it going to cost if I'm forced to drive 50 miles to work?"

Withholding benefit payoffs until the bitter end is common among retailers who want to keep their stores fully staffed up to the very last day. But Albertsons LLC added a severance twist that limits worker options and cuts expenses.

"We regard severance as bridging the gap between employment," said Shane McEntarffer, an Albertsons spokesman.

It's a policy that been used elsewhere by Albertsons LLC as its owners at Cerberus Capital Management closed or sold chunks of the 655-store chain they've whittled to about 275 stores since buying them for $1.1-billion in 2006.

A dozen workers interviewed at six Pinellas County Albertsons complained about the severance policy. But they asked not to be identified because managers threatened to withhold severance to anyone who grouses publicly. An Albertsons spokesman assured the Times there would be no retribution.

But many workers said the severance issue is one reason only a fraction of the 120 to 150 workers at each store accepted jobs with Publix so far.

There is a much bigger reason than severance: Publix has yet to respond to most Albertsons employees with either a job offer or rejection.

Employee-owned Publix, which pays better than Albertsons and for years has been top-rated nationally in customer service by Consumer Reports, is picky about hiring. It terms the severance policy "totally Albertsons' doing."

But Publix, which announced the acquisition on June 9, is under other pressures because all 49 stores will be closed once the deal is completed between Sept. 9 and 20. Each store will reopen after a remodeling. But that will take one to 18 months, depending on the extent of the work. So Publix faces a lot of juggling to integrate so many Albertsons hires into its payroll.

"We have been very impressed with the passion to serve exhibited by many Albertsons employees, and we are committed to relay all job decisions by the first week of September," said Maria Brous, a spokeswoman for the Lakeland chain. "Our goal from the start is to absorb as much of the payroll as we can and deploy Albertsons people to other locations during the interim. We'll need talent on board to staff all 49 stores."

Hugh..Albertsons obviously was in trouble and Publix bought the stores as a smart way to save the stores from been bought by Wal-mart witch would of meant u would of had a chance to work there, now u have a chance to work for a MUCH better company.

This sounds like a job for... "SUPER LAWYER." A great chance for a (No)Class Lawsuit.
by CJ Aug 28, 2008 11:22 AM
Write or email Publix and tell them you are not shopping there anymore. I sure wouldn't want to work there knowing all this. Of course, who can refuse any job? But We the People have the grocery $$. & higher prices means Aldi 4 me Shame on U Publix
by Rickster Aug 28, 2008 11:04 AM
Can you say collusion?? How about Class Action Suit??
by Joe W. Aug 27, 2008 1:41 PM
Can there be any better of an example of why all of you should have supported a union? A group of one holds no bargaining power when management wants to push you around.
by Allen Aug 27, 2008 11:41 AM
As a NEHI grad - funny I never see the people who studied and worked hard in school stocking shelves or running a register. I have seen the disruptive lazy party people there. Funny huh! They treat you how they want cause you made your bed years ago!
by HughJorgan Aug 27, 2008 10:06 AM
As a current Albetsons employee, I agree with much of what has been in the paper. It boils down to the almighty dollar for both Cerebus and Publix. Old man Jenkins would roll over in his grave if he saw what has become of his stores.
by Barbara Aug 27, 2008 10:06 AM
Shame on Albertsons for withholding serverance packages! What hourly employee can afford to drive up to 100 miles daily and earn 80% of their former pay? That sounds like an idea from John McCain.
by Larry Aug 26, 2008 8:06 PM
As a previous employee of a profitable buisness razed by Cerberus Capital, let me warn you: believe nothing if not on paper, promises are worth nothing. Their purpose is to liquidate and take assets, even at a cost to worthy employees. Beware CCM!
by Zippy Aug 26, 2008 8:05 PM
This sounds like a way for Albertsons to get out of paying unemployment. Their greed knows no bounds.
by Bill Aug 26, 2008 8:05 PM
I work in grocery store and if I didn't have the union by my side I would be in the same situation like u.You need the union contact them they will help, you all will be better off.
by fj Aug 26, 2008 8:05 PM
another case of screwing the underdog!!! why are you all so shocked???
by Chris Aug 26, 2008 6:51 PM
One more thing, It's just bad business the way both companies are running this , plus a third company running the mark downs...and STILL ALMOST NO ANSWERS for employees with 5 days left in most stores...GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL !!!
by Chris Aug 26, 2008 6:50 PM
I sit here and read these comments, Close them, who cares, crudy employees, Do you people realize the amount of people out of jobs now...I work there, I see there faces, We (most) served you well over the years, and now some have no jobs..
by BB Aug 26, 2008 5:31 PM
Publixis just taking out all the competition around the state. When I go to towns that it is onlyPublix, their pricing is out of control. They try to get you in with BOGO items but the rest of the product areover priced. Shop at Sweetbay better Priced
by aj Aug 26, 2008 3:23 PM
I have worked in the past for both companys and Publix no matter what you believe in this time of grief is the better company to work for. But believe me the retail unions will do NOTHING for you but take your money every week. Been there done that.
by alb Aug 26, 2008 3:23 PM
It's Albertsons why expect anything different it is all about business would why they do anything different now...you saw how they worked the going out of business sale THERE WEREN'T ANY DEALS!
by Bud Aug 26, 2008 3:19 PM
The FUND that bought Albertson's should be held accountable to Albertson's employes and no company should require their employees to jump through so many hoops to retain a job!!
by SoSo List Aug 26, 2008 2:12 PM
All of you who are complaining about "Golden Parachutes", Corporate Greed & "Rich Fat Cat" Executives...come November Vote for BRIAN MOORE (Socialist) - you'll have to write-in because alternate parties don't ever make it to our ballots...
by Sal Aug 26, 2008 2:12 PM
Hey,things could get worse:we could soon have a new pres in washington that thinks it is normal to have a 5 mil income and 7 homes...hopefully the voting public will recognize a vote for McCain is a vote for a continuation of the bush era...
by Judy Aug 26, 2008 2:12 PM
Iowa and other states are just as "dirty" as Florida.Things have changed over the years,so much for security in your retirement. Publix will have a "field day" with higher prices, and with gas prices,it's going to be like your trapped!Shop elsew
by jes Aug 26, 2008 2:12 PM
ALSO, has anyone else noticed how Albertson's jacked up their prices before the "great" markdowns??? Let's call for the State Attorny General to investigate the Publix/Albertsons deal all around.
by John Aug 26, 2008 1:49 PM
Another example, how to avoid doing whats right I bet the execs are well taken care of. This is like when Lykes Pasco sold out everybody gets screwed and the union employees finds out their pension was embezzeled. Choke on your greed Rich Fat Cats.
by James Aug 26, 2008 1:49 PM
Im sure the Execs and their buddies are taken care of while people who are working from paycheck to paycheck once again suffer and it's more than high school students working there Companyies have no loyalty with their employees anymore it's with $$$
by jerry Aug 26, 2008 1:49 PM
Hey no worry folks, happened to me 4+ years ago (HS Grad and 4yr college degree) still no job! But remember, the 'rebublicans' and George Bush are keeping an eye on the economy for ya!!! The Regan 'trickle down' economy is working great..for a few!
by James Aug 26, 2008 1:48 PM
It's amazing how years of dedication from the Albertson's employees results in a nice screw job from the upper management. No wonder no one stays committed to anything for too long.
by Paul Aug 26, 2008 1:47 PM
This severance agreement brings to light the collusion between Publix and Albertson to save a few dollars at the employees expense. These 2 stores should play fair. These long term employees deserve a severence.
by NA Aug 26, 2008 1:46 PM
same thing son & stepson w/albertsons over 1.5 yrs, p/t. They interviewed, heard nada. They never missed day of work in those yrs. My son was top cashier for 13 months straight. No assistance on xferring & they refuse to provide references. Nice!
by Bob Aug 26, 2008 1:41 PM
Againt unions??? Every perk and benefit you enjoy today was fought for and won by unions. Now that unions are in decline, so are your perks and benefits. It's your choice so quit squaking. It's mind over matter: they don't mind, you don't matter!!!
by g Aug 26, 2008 1:41 PM
I say we all get the heck out of dodge and blow this state. That's what they want any way, for all of us to get out.
by Sally Aug 26, 2008 1:41 PM
Kim, this isn't a result of 'original' Albertson's mgmt. This is a result of a take over group that wants to rape the company and then sell it for what it can. Welcome to America!
by Al Aug 26, 2008 11:46 AM
Let's say I make $10/hr and get an offer for 80%, at a store 50 miles away...80% of $10 is $8 an hour. 50 miles @ 21mpg is 2.4 gallons @ $3.60 is $8.64 to get to work, $17.28 roundtrip = working 2 hrs, 10min per day for gas, 2 hr and 36min after tax
by NA Aug 26, 2008 11:46 AM
And since albertsons refusing to provide references, how are these recent HS grads going to find other jobs while they go to college PT with no proof they even worked there? This why I gave up corp. HR career got sick of seeing emps treated this way
by John Aug 26, 2008 11:45 AM
It's not fair. I am tired of the rich getter golden parachutes while everyone else fights over pennies. This country needs a more fair prosperity.
by jim Aug 26, 2008 9:28 AM
I hope they eliminate most of the employee, as many were not professional, looked and dressed scrubby, which seemed to be the standard at Albertson's
