Coldwater Creek sues to keep International Plaza location

The owners of Coldwater Creek filed suit in Hillsborough County Circuit Court seeking a court order to prevent being kicked out of International Plaza after an eight-year run. The women's apparel chain's store remains open. But Taubman Centers Inc., which manages the Tampa mall, in March took the first steps to terminate the lease, claiming Coldwater had not done enough business there in 2010. Coldwater lawyers say the Tampa store is profitable, but claim Taubman was following up on a "vindictive" verbal threat to "retaliate" for Coldwater closing an unprofitable store in March in another Taubman mall in Stamford, Conn. The Sandpoint, Idaho, chain has not been profitable since 2007. The retailer, which gets a third of its business through mail order, lost $128 million since suffering an 8.5 percent sales drop in stores open more than a year in 2010.
