Edwin Watts Golf Shops has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Reuters reported. The retailer, which has five stores in the Tampa Bay area and about 90 stores in the Southeast, is owned by private equity firm Sun Capital Partners Inc. It will seek a sale of its assets by Dec. 6 through a court-supervised auction, according to papers filed Monday in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del.
The company said "a significant number" of stores are expected to continue operating, but a final count has not yet been determined. The Fort Walton Beach-based company sells golf equipment, apparel and accessories.
